Welcome to “Hallway Conversations!" We are three friends who have been teaching for quite a while, but we still have lots of questions about education. This is our place for thinking out loud about topics we think are important for Christian educators to consider. We regularly have face-to-face hallway conversations, and this podcast is our way of inviting you in to our reflections on contemporary education. Our deep hope is that you would find these conversations an opportunity for your own reflection--that you would be challenged and encouraged in your work as an educator, and that you might even chuckle along as we think on our feet and stumble through trying to answer each others questions about what it means to take our faith seriously as we consider our work as educators. Episode 017: Awards
Wednesday Jun 02, 2021
Wednesday Jun 02, 2021
In today’s episode, we have a question from a listener! Kevin asks, “What role do end-of-the-year awards ceremonies play in schools, and what role should they play?” Abby and Matt share their (very different!) experiences with high school awards ceremonies, and we think about what kinds of messages are conveyed through the particular gifts and talents we might award (or not.) Dave shares about an approach a school he used to teach at used for celebrating gifts of all of the students. We talk through various aspects of recognition, and the importance of “seeing” our students and “naming” their strengths as part of their formal education. We have lots of wondering, and perhaps you’ll even find a few new ideas about the role that awards can play in a healthy school community.
