Welcome to “Hallway Conversations!" We are three friends who have been teaching for quite a while, but we still have lots of questions about education. This is our place for thinking out loud about topics we think are important for Christian educators to consider. We regularly have face-to-face hallway conversations, and this podcast is our way of inviting you in to our reflections on contemporary education. Our deep hope is that you would find these conversations an opportunity for your own reflection--that you would be challenged and encouraged in your work as an educator, and that you might even chuckle along as we think on our feet and stumble through trying to answer each others questions about what it means to take our faith seriously as we consider our work as educators. Episode 054: Not Just the Icing on the Cake
Wednesday Mar 09, 2022
Wednesday Mar 09, 2022
We jump in with a check-in question this week, things we are currently learning. A diverse set of answers to this question among the three of us: a new computer programming language, running a caulk gun, and getting out of our comfort zones to meet new people. (Care to guess who said which one of these?)
In this episode, we have a question from a listener! Susan asks, “Many teachers struggle with integrating faith and learning well–doing it more than a devotional activity or an add-on to a lesson. How can we do this in a God-honoring and natural way?” In response, Matt shares a bit from an article by one of our colleagues, Dr. Leah Zuidema, entitled “Integral, Not Integrated” and we think through some different ideas of what faith-informed teaching might look like in practice. In particular, we discuss ways of moving beyond “sprinkling on a little Jesus,” to teaching in a way that makes faith more than just icing on the cake.
- Friends, we are preparing for our first book discussion! We are going to be reading and discussing Flourishing Together: A Christian Vision for Students, Educators, and Schools by Lynn Swaner and Andy Wolfe. We would love it if you would read along, and even submit questions you might have! The book has five sections, and we will be discussing one section each week beginning on March 30, 2022. We would love it if you would read along with us, and even submit your questions, comments, wonderings. Drop us a note at hallwayconvospod@gmail.com You can order your copy of the book here: Amazon link
